Speech season is in full swing at G-R. You can find the school's auditorium alive with the sound of speech kids every morning beginning at seven. There are a total of forty-four students involved in large group speech this year, leaving the speech coach, Ellen Wagner, with quite a load of work. Mrs. Wagner is in charge of getting all these kids ready for district speech on January 19th in LaPorte City. If the groups perform well enough, they can make it to state. If the group is outstanding, they may even make All-State Speech.
This year, G-R will be taking many different types of performances to districts. Some of them will be the first time that G-R has sent a group in that category. For example, students will perform a choral reading entitled, After Death, written by Gladbrook-Reinbeck's very own, Courtney Crozier. Steel Magnolias will be performed as a one act play, another new category for our speech team, and a mime group will also perform. There are also two separate musical theatre groups, a popular category, performing renditions of Footloose and Tick, Tick, Boom! As well as three improvisation groups, two ensemble acting pieces, a reader's theatre, and a short film will be competing. All of the speech kids are working their hardest to ensure that all of these acts or performances are ready by the 19th. If we are lucky, perhaps we can get just as many acts onto state.
