On Tuesday, the 11th, the Rebel girls faced off against their rival the Grundy Center Spartans. The Spartans came into the game with a 5-1 record, and the Rebels came into the game with a 2-4 record. This NICL-West matchup started out extremely lopsided in favor of the Spartans. The first quarter ended with the Spartans in the lead 27-9. A deficit this large is extremely challenging to overcome, but if any method of basketball can do it, it would be The System. The System is the fast-paced style of basketball that the Rebels adopted three years ago. When talking with Coach Bailey he shared, "We couldn't match their intensity and pressure in the first quarter. Their defensive pressure took us out of what we wanted to do in the first quarter. I thought after the first quarter we settled in and played pretty well."
The Spartans strong post play was tough to stop, but the Rebels were able to collect 21 steals. The steals were led by Taylor Flamme (6), Nicole Adair (3), and Emily Snider (3). Flamme's speed and defensive ability has served as a rock for the Rebels throughout the season so far. After the first quarter, the Rebels were able to stay almost even with the Spartans.
The Rebels knew that rebounding was going to be a must coming into Tuesday night's game. They have been focusing on it in practice, and it has improved. The rebounding was also lead by Taylor Flamme who ripped down five for the night. Amber Berendes had four and Erin Wentzien had three rebounds for the Rebels. Again, talking with Coach Bailey his thoughts on the rebounding were, "I thought we did okay, (we) always want more rebounds obviously, but they have three pretty good post players that can go and get the basketball. I thought we did pretty well."
The scoring was lead by Erin Wentzien (11), Nicole Adair (10), Emily Snider (9), Hayley Weber (5), and Amber Berendes (5). A few more of Tuesday's contributors were Britney Keller (4), Ellie Stoakes (4), Kyleah Dugan (3) and Taylor Flamme (3).
The Rebels are going to go back to work with two practices, and then they will play West Marshall Friday, December 14th. Come out and support your Rebels!
