On Saturday, November 3rd, the Black Hawk Nighthawks 4-H Club gathered at Parkview Nursing Home to spend some time with the residents. We shared a working exhibit, a presentation & a skit that were performed at the County Fair last summer (the working exhibit & presentation also went on to the Iowa State Fair).
Hannah Martin and Ashley Moore showed the residents how to make an easy bookmark with all the members helping by handing out materials and helping make the bookmarks. Then Audrey Leyen did a presentation about dolphins. After that, Emma Fleshner sang a very nice song. Next, we performed the hat skit we did at the Grundy County Fair. Then, we handed out cookies and cupcakes to the residents.
Following our time with the residents, we met for a short meeting. Our roll call was "say your name and what you are thankful for". On November 18th the Grundy County 4-H Youth Committee will be hosting the Awards Celebration & Family Movie Day the Grundy Center Theatre. In December, we plan to visit the NorthEast Iowa food bank. Malissa will let everyone know the date and time when that is finalized with the food bank.
Black Hawk Nighthawks members with the apple press at Hartman Reserve Nature Center.
Following our short meeting, we went to the Fountain on Main for lunch. After lunch, most of us rode on Carla and Kevin Leyen's bus to the Hartman Reserve for the "Fall Apple Cidering" program. We learned about scat, bees, how apple trees are planted and how apple cider is made. Then we all had a chance to use the apple press to make apple cider to drink. The cider was very good and the program was interesting.
News from the Black Hawk Nighthawks 4-H Club
The Black Hawk Nighthawks 4-H Club held their regular monthly meeting on October 14th and the roll call was "say your favorite Halloween costume".
Malissa shared that the Park Board is looking for anyone interested in researching and planning landscaping (including perhaps a rain garden) to help the area west of the new Little League softball/baseball concession stand that can get a bit swampy. Enrollment day was October 13th. If you haven't yet enrolled for the new year, contact Andrea at the County Extension Office. On October 13th, the County Council organized a Halloween party at the Barn Stahl Petting Zoo & Corn Maze near Wellsburg. Malissa gave out Younkers booklets. We decided that the November meeting will be held on Saturday November 3, and include a visit to Parkview Nursing Home, and then a trip to the Hartman Reserve Nature Center for the "Fall Apple Cidering" program.
Karly Wilhau did a presentation on how to make a recycled shirt bag. Julie Grunklee talked to us about first-aid kits for different situations including what should be in one and why.
