On October 2nd, a tight-nit group of Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School students loaded a van at 7:00 a.m. to attend a Leadership Summit at the Iowa Memorial Union and Carver Hawkeye Arena. The purpose of this field trip was to promote the character and leadership within schools. Iowa High Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union were sponsors of this event.
The attendees included: Mr. John Olson, Colton Dinsdale, Megan Oelschlager, Shelton Hatch, Zach Pierce, Taylor Weida, Pete Meyers, Trevor Trunck, and Emily Snider.
The day consisted of a number of speakers about character and leadership. Some of the speakers were University of Iowa employees, coaches, and athletes. Other speakers came from across the state and are involved in education.
Since the event, the students are formulating ideas for implementing this program in our school at Gladbrook-Reinbeck. The are focusing on the idea of a Rebel of the Week, or a Rebel of the Month.
When reflecting on the trip, all agree that it was a great experience! They were especially appreciative for the opportunity to learn from a wide range of different groups of people than who they'd usually hear from. The students hope to make a change in our school really soon!
