On Monday, November 5, 2012 local Veterans were honored at Parkview Manor nursing home in Reinbeck, Iowa. Sid Morris, the Tall Corn Chapter President of the Korean War Veterans' Association was present to hand out 60th year anniversary Peace Medals. The 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration states that its mission is to honor the service of Korean War Veterans, American service members and allies. The Korean War is often referred to as "The Forgotten War." The events and battles of the war are little known by the American public today. The committee seeks to further the publics' awareness of the history and impact of the Korean War. The website states, "We must never forget the selfless sacrifices of the Veterans who fought in Korea to ensure the freedom and prosperity we enjoy today. The Veterans who shivered in the trenches, tracked through knee-deep mud, flew combat missions over rugged mountainous terrain, and stood watch over hostile seas set aside their own comfort, safety and aspirations to answer the call to arms at a time when our nation was still exhausted from the horrors of World War II. These patriots halted the tide of communism that threatened to sweep over the Korean peninsula. Today the Republic of Korea stands as a modern, prosperous, vibrant democracy because of their courage and selfless sacrifice."

The American Legion Post #242, Auxiliary and the Sons' of the Legion also presented the Korean War veterans' 50th Anniversary medals and WWII veterans' 70th anniversary medals.

Recipients of medals were Korean War veterans Leland Staker U.S. Army, Donald Bown U.S. Army, Howard Corwin U.S. Air Force and Kenneth Thede, U.S. Army. WWII veterans honored were James Miller, U.S. Army and Annabelle Claussen Ward U.S. Navy.

Morris said, "South Korea is the tenth largest economy today. This is a good example of the importance of free people and the Korean War exemplifies the saying that freedom isn't free."
