September 23, 2012
Reinbeck Courier

DES MOINES, Iowa The applications for professional and emerging artists from Iowa opened September 4, 2012. The deadline for all artist applications for the 2013 Des Moines Arts Festival, presented by The Des Moines Register, is Monday, Oct. 31, 2012, at 12:59:59 p.m. CST. Online applications, submission guidelines and policies can be found at www.zapplication.org.

The application process for the Des Moines Arts Festival is facilitated completely online through ZAPPlication (ZAPP), a universal online application system that allows artists to submit and manage applications for participating art shows, festivals and fairs via the Internet. ZAPP is developed and managed by Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF), a nonprofit arts service organization that was founded in 1974. Located in Denver, Colorado, the organization is a leader in the development of innovative Web-based technologies to serve artists across the United States.

Professional visual artists applying for the Festival are required to submit six images, including a booth shot, for the five-person blind jury process. Up to 170 spaces are available through the jury process, while 15 booth spaces are reserved for 2012 Award Winners and invitations.

Professional artists may submit an application in the following mediums: Ceramics, Drawing/Pastels, Fiber, Glass, Jewelry, Metalworks, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture and Wood.

In addition to the professional juried art fair, Iowa residents currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within one year) from a university, college or art school anywhere in the U.S. are eligible to apply to the Emerging Iowa Artists (EIA) program. This program, sponsored by Principal Financial Group, allows individuals to promote their talents and sell their artwork at the Festival completely free of charge, including application and booth fees. Artists can participate in the EIA program for two years (either consecutively or non-consecutively). Those applying in the EIA program are selected based on the same criteria and by the same panel of jurors as the professional artists.
