Healthier recipes triumph in State Fair foods competition

September 13, 2012
Reinbeck Courier

Phil Dicks of Grundy Center took home the blue ribbon in the Healthy Creations competition's Healthy Recipe Makeover class judged at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Second place was awarded to Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville, and Diane Rauh of Des Moines received third place.

Entrants had to create a recipe that was reduced in calories, fat and sodium. Increased fiber content and reduced sugar content were also desirable. Entries were judged on flavor, reduction of calories, fat and sodium, appearance, originality and creativity and ease of preparation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging was held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
