Patient safety recognition for Grundy County Memorial Hospital

September 9, 2012
Reinbeck Courier

Grundy County Memorial Hospital (GCMH) is among eight Iowa hospitals honored for efforts to increase patient safety. Iowa Health System (IHS) recognized affiliate hospitals that made the biggest improvement in reducing falls and related injuries among patients.

The system-wide Falls Teams each received training to help improve safety in individual hospitals, care centers, and home health care agencies for the past several years. "The training demonstrated how to successfully test new ideas and implement changes that made improvements for our patients and residents," says Laura Woebbeking, GCMH Quality Manager. "Patients who are not at risk for falls when in their own home have an increased risk when they're ill or recovering from surgery." For instance, Woebbeking says conditions that might contribute to falls in a hospital or long term care setting include medications that cause dizziness, weakness from illness, dementia, or patients thinking that they are able to do something that they may not be strong enough to do as they recover from surgery or illness.

Iowa Health System President and CEO Bill Leaver and Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Alan Kaplan recently honored each hospital's Falls Team and challenged the teams to share their successes throughout the health system. In addition to Grundy County Memorial Hospital, other IHS hospitals recognized for patient safety initiatives include Allen Hospital in Waterloo and St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, as well as the Finley Hospital in Dubuque.
