IOWA FALLS It's not too late to apply for admission to Ellsworth Community College and register for fall term classes that start Aug. 27. The sooner the better, though, the ECC Admissions Office staff advises many popular first-year classes are already filling up.
"It seems like our students fall into two distinct groups: the ones who decide early and register early, and the ones who wait until late summer to commit," says Annie Kalous, ECC Associate Dean of Enrollment Services. "Either is fine, but those who still haven't completed paperwork for admission need to get things moving so they have a good selection of classes to choose from this fall. Our enrollment numbers are trending upward, which means many freshman-level classes will close soon because they're full."
Kalous says interest in ECC is up this fall for several reasons, one of which may be the fact that ECC has one of the highest student success rates in the state. The word is also out that ECC graduates have the lowest average student debt load of any college or university in Iowa, which is a big factor for individuals and families as they consider investing in a college education.
"The facts are important to students and parents, and these two factors have made a big impression for us this summer," says Kalous. "Students want to be successful in college, so the fact that Ellsworth has one of the highest student success rates in the state is huge. Student debt is also a big factor, so when we're able to show that our graduates have less student debt than those from other colleges, people take notice. It's a one-two punch that we're very pleased to be marketing right now!"
With approximately 80 percent of ECC students taking the first two years' coursework at Ellsworth and then transferring to finish a bachelor's degree, the College's dual enrollment agreements with Iowa, Iowa State and UNI are also popular. Students who want to start at Ellsworth and transfer to one of the Regent universities can be enrolled at both colleges at the same time, which facilitates the transfer of credits and increases the students' comfort level at both colleges.
"The other big selling point for us is that students love the small, private college feel of the Ellsworth campus as soon as they step on the grounds," says Kalous. "You'll find friendly faces at every corner, ready to help you with any questions you might have."
