Covenant Clinic will be offering an eight week program to help control gastrointestinal symptoms. The eight week program presented by Dr. Caroline Quander and Covenant Medical Center Licensed Registered Dietitian Mary Steffensmeier will meet every two weeks. The first class will take place on Monday August 13, 2012 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Kimball Ridge Center Boardroom located at 2101 Kimball Ridge Avenue, Waterloo.
The program includes an intense FODMAPs elimination diet. FODMAPs are a group of carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed. They are therefore fermented by intestinal bacteria releasing gas and leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, wind, reflux, diarrhea and/or constipation.
The first two weeks will focus on the elimination of all foods that contain five forms of carbohydrates. If FODMAP carbohydrates are causing the symptoms, relief can occur in just a few days. The elimination period will then be followed with a challenge of reintroducing FODMAPs back, one at a time, and observing for symptoms. The program will include instruction and guidance from a licensed registered dietitian. Follow up meetings will then be every two weeks with support from individuals with the same diagnoses.
A physician referral for diagnosis of IBS and a diet order for Medical Nutrition Therapy Program on FODMAP Diet plan are required to participate in the program.
