There will be a community wide Red Cross blood drive on July 5th, at the Memorial Building, from 2:00 - 6:00. Mark your calendar now, and plan to give. Better yet, bring a friend along with you and you can both donate the gift of life.
The summer months pose challenges to blood drives, as donations tend to dip while individuals and families pack their schedules full of fun summer activities. To ensure that blood products are available to every patient in need, the Red Cross is kicking off its summer program to help boost donations during the difficult summer months. This year's summer program - Live Life. Give Life. - urges all eligible donors to give blood and give someone else a chance to live. And, this summer when donors present to give the gift of life, they have a chance to win gift certificate packages.
Here are some important facts and figures about the importance of giving blood:
Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion.
Blood is a perishable product that can only come from generous volunteer blood donors.
Blood and platelets can be used for trauma victims - due to accidents and burns - heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, premature babies and for patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or other diseases, such as sickle cell disease.
The American Red Cross collects approximately 40 percent of the blood needed each year in the U.S.
One out of every 10 people admitted to the hospital needs blood.
Plan to attend this blood drive. If you have never donated blood before, now would be an excellent time to start, and if it has been a long time since you donated, get back in the habit. Enjoy the good feeling that comes with knowing that you may have helped save as many as three lives.
