As I drive through Grundy County I see signs supporting Rep. Pat Grassley. I have to ask myself "WHY? Why are these people supporting Pat Grassley to represent them at the Iowa State House?" Do they not know Rep. Grassley's voting record? Are they not aware of the fact that Rep. Grassley turned his back on his own home town of New Hartford following the devastating F-5 tornado on Memorial Day, 2008, that also devastated his neighboring community of Parkersburg?
Yes, that is true! During the 2009 Legislative session, the Iowa Legislature took steps to provide critically needed financial assistance to Rep. Grassley's home town of New Hartford, Parkersburg, and five other Iowa communities devastated by the F-5 tornado. One such step was found in #SF478. This bill passed the Iowa Senate and was sent to the Iowa House for their consideration. After amendment #H1779 was added, which added money for these communities, the House of Representatives had their chance to vote. Sadly and almost shockingly when this bill actually came up for a final vote, New Hartford's own, Rep. Pat Grassley, voted "NAY" - that's right - he voted AGAINST his friends and neighbors, the same people who had sent him to Des Moines in the belief that he would represent their needs in the House of Representatives! Luckily for the citizens of Parkersburg and New Hartford, the majority of members of the Iowa House understood the need of these communities and placed the well-being of the citizens of Iowa ahead of their party's political agenda and the bill passed WITHOUT Rep. Grassley's support thus giving Parkersburg, New Hartford and the other towns the financial help they needed to rebuild.
So I have to ask - if Rep. Grassley is not willing to support his own home town and neighboring area after a terrible disaster such as the F-5 tornado, what makes you think that he would be willing to support those of us who live in Beaman, Conrad, Holland, Grundy Center, Iowa Falls, Alden, Ackley, Buckeye, Steamboat Rock or any of the other communities in House District 50? My answer is: HE PROBABLY WON'T!
