The truth will set you free! Luke 24:44-53

Pastor Boyce , Reinbeck Courier

I am always saddened when hearing someone say that they have been on the go all week so Sunday morning is the only morning they can have freedom in their schedule; i.e., freedom to sleep in and the freedom not to have to go to a worship service in a home parish, or a nearby church for those without a church home. Unfortunately, this is not what freedom is all about. The freedom that our Creator-Father has accomplished for us came at a great expense to Him and to our dear Lord, Jesus Christ.

Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." (Luke 24:46-47)

Two things are necessary for your salvation. First, that Christ died for your sins and rose again on Easter. Second, that repentance and forgiveness be proclaimed to you.

Jesus accomplishes and delivers salvation like this: First He dies for your sins and then He sends His preachers into the world to deliver His forgiveness. Some refer to this as "Salvation Accomplished" and "Salvation Delivered." (Objective and Subjective forgiveness refers to the objective forgiveness and righteousness for all sin through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the subjective receiving of this forgiveness and righteousness as a heart is brought to trust this gift by God's gift of grace through faith.)

Easter is the final nail for death's coffin. The Ascension of Jesus is so that He can send His apostles out into the world with those nails and pound them in. That is, He sends them to preach His death and resurrection, His victory over sin and death. He sends them to preach and teach and rescue us from the Devil's lies and the hold of death.

By that preaching of Christ, Jesus Himself lifts you up to be with Him so that, as God says, you are now, "seated in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 1:20). Because Jesus is your righteousness, and because He has ascended to the Father's right hand, nothing can rob you of your righteousness. The devil can't get to Jesus. Death can't have Him. Therefore because Jesus is ascended, your salvation is complete. A done deal. There's nothing for you to add. It's all been accomplished "It is finished!"

The devil and our sinful human nature, seek to find freedom in something we do or choose to do, but true freedom has come only it what God has done for us the Gospel of Salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. So one may think they have found freedom in their choice to stay home from worship, when in essence they are neglecting the very means of God's grace through His Word and His Sacraments, given and shed for you and all, for the forgiveness of sins freedom in Jesus Christ.

The Lord continues coming to His church by His Word to forgive and to save, strengthen and prepare us for eternal life. The faithful pastors, teachers and witnesses of God's love in Christ, continues to be the means by which you have freedom in forgiveness and in life.

God bless you through every means by which His pure Word proclaims to you His peace through Jesus Christ.
