The 27th annual HELPING HANDS 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament was held in the South Hardin Middle School gym in Hubbard on Saturday, March 17. There were 66 teams playing in the 5 divisions subdivided into 9 brackets for 2nd graders through adults; teams could be co-ed.
Each division champion team member was awarded a trophy and a T-shirt. In each bracket, team members received a large engraved medal for champion second, third, and Consolation first. Champion fourth and Consolation second, third, and fourth each received a fancy ribbon which indicated the position the team finished in their division.
The crowd had high numbers from both the Colo-NESCO and South Hardin communities watching teams from their schools compete, 17 from C-N and 15 from SH. Nineteen other districts were represented. Additionally, there were 14 communities represented in the Post High School division.
The workers at the tournament were all volunteers and ranged in age from 12 years to adult; most were sixth through high schoolers. Tasks included setting up, taking admission, signing in teams, refereeing, keeping score, tracking the team pairings, fixing and serving food, and cleaning up.
The concession stand was non-stop busy. This year the proceeds from T-shirt sales and the drawings held during the tournament were added to the HELPING HANDS Medical Fund which is designated for local students with special medical needs. It is estimated that HELPING HANDS, during its 28 years of existence, has given about $95,000.00 to community organizations, activities, fund-raisers, and events plus countless hours of in-kind and planning hours.
The intent of the tournament is always to be a fund-raiser but as it stated on the entry form, it is designed to be fun and enjoyable for everyone. If you wish information to be sent to you about next year's tournament, please contact LYNN BRINKMEYER, PO BOX 22, HUBBARD, IA 50122, 641-864-2742,
