I mentioned last week that we attended our annual winter meetings recently. These meetings are produced by the Iowa Association of County Conservation Board Employees. The committee that is responsible for the planning of this event does a wonderful job and never receives enough credit or praise. They meet regularly throughout the year to pull it off.
The Tuesday keynote speaker was Gary Clancy. Gary is an outdoor writer from Minnesota and I found his presentation entertaining and inspiring. This is a good thing because the title of his presentation was "Outdoor Inspiration." Between his Vietnam experiences, battle with cancer, father's death, and finally his near drowning, I left thanking God for all that I truly have for which to be thankful.
The entire three day event is head and shoulders above some other workshops that I attend. There were many informative sessions that help us do a better job at serving the residents (two and four legged) of Grundy County.
The real thing that I wanted to highlight this week is another aspect of the Iowa Association of County Conservation Boards. It's a truly exciting website called My County Parks. I hope that when you finish reading this column you will take the time to type in mycountyparks.com and take a look at it for yourself. There, you will easily be able to visit every county conservation board program in Iowa. Go to Grundy County first. Then plan to go back over the next week, month and year as the IT department is working on our page right now with information on Grundy County parks and wildlife areas. More pictures will be added shortly.
The Iowa County Conservation Board system has been a model for many other programs across this nation. If you spend a little time on the site, I'm sure you will be surprised at the variety and wealth of county parks, trails, nature centers, hunting areas, lakes and streams that are minutes from your door.
In this day of the worldwide web, so many people look to that for information first. The Iowa Associations of County Conservation Boards have something to be proud of in this site. Now I will admit that I read and hear about all sorts of websites every day. AND if you are anything like me you forget part of the name by the time you get home that night (most of the time far sooner than that!). If you forget the name when you go to look don't worry. Punching in the search words county parks brought me a list with the My County Parks site the second in the list. Punching in Iowa county parks had it there first. I am convinced that once you find it, My County Parks will be an easy one to remember.
We truly do have so many places right here in Iowa that we should see and experience. Mycountyparks.com is a great place to start the adventure.
