On Saturday, January 21, our school had 30 students participated in the large group speech contest at Union High School in La Porte City. The freshman team consisted of Ashley Moore, Alyona Strohbehn, Hanna Christopher, Madde Wild, Jenny Schildroth, Emily Johnson, Cydney Rose and Elise Peterson. They all performed a reader's theater called "How to Kill a Mockingbird," which is a spoof on the classic novel. Ashley, Alyona and Hanna are also performed an ensemble acting piece called "Friends Forever?" that depicted three friends
auditioning for the school play; Jenny, Emily, Cydney and Elise also performed an ensemble acting piece called "Let the Games Begin," in which Elise's character tries to train the other three in popularity survival skills.
The upperclassmen varsity team had several events. They performed a readers theater, entitled "The Main Event: Dick and Jane vs. Gutenburg and Gates,"that traveled back in time to see how books and reading came to be. This was the biggest group, consisting of: Shelby Yates, Cody Ward, Joey Linder, Erin Wentzien, Emily Goodenbour, Tyler Wrage, Rebecca Franksain, Cortney Crozier, Callie Kuehl, Taylor Street, Kayla Fobian, Rachel Franksain, Kaitie Mohlis and Ellie Stoakes.
We had two ensemble acting events: Breanna Schlictmann and Kayla Fobian performed a drama called "ASH," about two girls who take the ashes of one of their deceased boyfriends up in an airplane to carry out his final wish; Emily Goodenbour, Kaitie Mohlis, Brooke Boyle and Rachel Franksain performed a piece called "Buffer Zone" in which three women find themselves in the "waiting room" to heaven. In true G-R fashion, our school also took three improvisation groups. With improv, the groups choose a situation at contest and have two minutes to prepare a scene with a beginning, middle and end.
The groups were: Erin Wentzien, Malinda Shoaf, Sadie Walton, Alyssa Christopher, Tyler Wrage, Aaron Shouse, Joey Linder, Ellie Stoakes and Caleb and Braden Heithoff. Caleb also submitted our first short film entry. Finally, we had two musical theater groups. This was G-R's first go with musical theater as well. Sadie Walton, Cortney Crozier, Shelby Yates, Alyssa Christopher and Rebecca Franksain performed a song called, "Omigod You Guys!" from Legally Blonde, The Musical, while Aaron Shouse and Braden Heithoff performed three selections from The Producers. G-R students going to state include: "The Main Event..."(Shelby Yates, Cody Ward, Joey Linder, Erin Wentzien, Emily Goodenbour, Tyler Wrage, Rebecca Franksain, Cortney Crozier, Callie
