Gladbrook - Reinbeck School Board

Thursday evening the Gladbrook-Reinbeck School Board accepted the early retirement applications and resignations of Barry Reese, April Acton and Jane Koele. Reese and Acton taught high school at Gladbrook until Gladbrook-Reinbeck started a sharing program and later merged, they then taught in the middle school. Currently Reese teaches social studies for grades 5-8 and Acton teaches language arts for grades 5-8. Koele served as librarian for Reinbeck and later Gladbrook-Reinbeck for 33 years.

The board accepted the resignation of Marcia Koester as head volleyball coach, pending a suitable replacement can be found.

Driver education fees will go up $10 for students and instructor salary will increase by $5. Cost will be $285 for resident students and $295 for non-resident students. Teacher salary will be $195 for Connie Doughan and Josh Yuoel. The district generated $12,787.50 in revenue in 2011 and spent $13,490.43 in salary, gasoline, etc.

The contract with Iowa Communications Network was renewed.

The board reviewed the 2012-13 school calendar that has school starting on August 15th and the last day being May 23rd. Thanksgiving break will be from November 21-23, Christmas break from December 22-January 2nd and spring break March 11-15. Graduation will be May 19th. Final action will be taken at the February meeting.

The 2013-14 school calendar was discussed. It is a more innovative calendar with more and longer breaks throughout the year. Classes would start August 28th and the last day of school would be June 11th. Graduation would be June 8th. There would be a fall break November 25-29; Christmas break would be December 23-January 3rd and spring break would be March 10-14. Supt. Tim Kuehl said the Cedar Valley West schools are striving to have the same calendar. Action on the 2013-14 calendar will be taken in April.

The bid from Waterloo Boiler for $192,790 for replacing the boiler at the high school was accepted. Their bid included an option for the control systems which was $17,820. The other bid came from Capital City Boiler and was for $193,615 and with the option was $207,475. Plans are to start on replacing the boiler after May 25th and to be completed by August 3rd.

It was the consensus of the board to sell the John Deere mower/blower/sweeper at the Reinbeck campus.

The Buildings and Grounds Committee of Mike Bearden, Matt Wyatt and Mandy Gehring will meet February 1st at 5:30 p.m. in Gladbrook to discuss the voted PPEL. The Policy Committee, Doug Rowe, Eric Sieh and Lisa Swanson will meet February 8th at 5:30. The work session will follow at 6:30 p.m.

The Site Visit will be March 27th and 28th and it was decided the entire board would sit in on it as it will be a learning experience for the new board members.

Jenna Roeding talked to the board about her internship experience at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital. She has been working the 2nd trimester from 1-3 p.m. every afternoon and has works with Kristie Barnett, the Social Worker in Long Term Care and with Crystal Petersen, Head Dietitian/Nutritional Manager. With Barnett she admits residents for LTC, does assessments on residents in LTC, assists with Care Conferences where she meets with family and residents and helps with activities in LTC. When working with Petersen she assisted with the Wellness Fair preparations, helped in the kitchen, helped with menu change for LTC and met with patients with different allergies.

Roeding said it has been a wonderful experience and has helped her make major decisions for her future plans after high school.

Kuehl said the superintendents of the Cedar Valley West schools met with Hawkeye and were told the teaching savings for next year when using our own instructors. The Cedar Valley West Schools want to continue with the internship program such as Roeding participated in and G-R said they would hold the contract for the individual hired to run the program and would be a 12-month contract.

Principal Bill Parker said Ashley Koch will be a student teacher in Chris Ciddio's 2nd grade room at the Gladbrook campus. Koch is completing her elementary education degree at UNI and attended school at BCLUW.

Lana Jocic will be a long-term sub for Jessica Weber when she takes Family Leave Time. Jocic graduated from UNI in December with a degree in guidance.

The next regular meeting will be February 16th, 6:30 p.m. at Gladbrook.
