Nutrition for diabetes prevention

Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare will be offering a free nutrition for diabetes prevention program to raise awareness of food factors that can help manage or prevent type 2 diabetes. The program will take place on Tuesday November 8, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in classroom 10 on the fourth floor in the Outpatient & Women's Center at Covenant Medical Center. Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator, Mary Steffensmeier will review lifestyle changes that can help reduce risks.

November is diabetes awareness month and according to the American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org) 25.8 Million People in the United States or 8.3% of the population have diabetes. Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to stop diabetes.

Mary Steffensmeier notes, "Our data shows type 2 diabetes developing at alarming rates and I fear if we don't stop this trend we will meet the prediction of one in three Americans being diagnosed with diabetes. Lifestyle changes have been shown to reduce risk." There is no cost to attend this program.
