On Monday October 10th the Pirates from Hudson made the trip to the Pit in Gladbrook for a JV District 4 battle. We saw on Friday that Hudson will come out and they like to hit. We expected a very physical game and that was exactly what we got. Both teams have been struggling record wise so each group worked really hard at righting the ship. It was a battle from the opening kickoff until the final horn sounded.
The game started off with both teams not really getting a whole lot going offensively. The defenses were playing well and field position was never really an issue in the first quarter as much of the time was spent between the thirty yard lines. The second quarter saw us stop the Pirates on downs at about our forty yard line with 7 minutes to go before half. We established a running attack mixed with a few passes and marched down the field for a touchdown on a 21 yard run from Dustin Dinsdale. Bennett Petersen added the PAT run and we were up 8-0. We stopped the Pirates again and took right off where left off and went down to score again on a TD run of 4 yards by Bennett. He also swept around left end for the PAT and we held a 16-0 lead at the half. We came out a little flat to open the second half and we let the momentum swing toward Hudson. They put up an early third quarter score to cut our lead to 16-6. They were again on the move and we forced a fumble in the end zone that we recovered so we took over at the 20. We added another fourth quarter Dustin TD run plus a Pete Meyers PAT run to finish this one off with a 24-6 victory. This moves us to 2-4 on the year. This was a good win for us. The kids have been working hard and they are getting better each time out. We have asked these young guys to do a lot this year and they have responded. This is a new level of football for many of them and they have answered the bell. I know our coaches are happy with their growth and especially all of the game experience these guys have gotten this year. This is a building experience for the future. Good work guys.
We ended up with 170 yards on the ground and 66 through the air offensively. Dustin lead the way with 104 followed by Bennett's 63 yards. Pete's first carry of his career netted him 3 yards also. Brady Kuehl completed 5 of 8 throws to Dustin, Bennett, Blake Kibe, and Phil Zimmerman. Defensively, Dustin was also solid with 7 tackles and an interception. Braden Trepp added 6 stops, Cameron Clark 5, Tyler Bovy and Pete had 4 tackles each. Bennett 3, Luke Holman, Wyatt Swanson, Phil, and Joey Linder 2, Bryce Ehlers, Blake, Austin Lott, and Dirk Thesing each had 1 stop apiece. Wyatt and Phil each had a pick and Joey, Austin, and Wyatt all recovered a fumble each. Stay tuned for the season finale next week.
