Laura Paine of West Des Moines won a gold medal at the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) tournament in East Chicago, Ind., Aug. 27, 2011.
Paine competed in the Women's No-Gi Jiu Jitsu contest, defeating her opponent 5-0. She received points for landing the takedown, a choke attempt and getting full mount.
This was her second NAGA tournament. She earned a silver medal in March while competing in St. Louis, Mo.
Her coach is Anthony Porcelli, a 13-time National Wrestling Champion. She trains at the Des Moines Mixed Martial Arts Academy where she is a student of boxing, kickboxing, jiu jitsu/grappling and muay thai.
Paine is the daughter of Mike and Debbie Paine and granddaughter of Junior and the late Ann Thede, all of Reinbeck. She is a 2003 graduate of Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School.
