Buena Vista University (BVU) formally dedicated its new artificial turf athletic field at Homecoming on Sept. 24 as "Peterson Field."
The dedication was done in appreciation for the contribution of Cordell Peterson, Class of 1963, and his wife, Sandra, who provided a $1.1 million leadership gift.
Cordell Peterson, a BVU Trustee, is president of Peterson Contractors, Inc. of Reinbeck, which specializes in heavy and highway construction, including bridges.

The Petersons were introduced to BVU fans at halftime of the Homecoming game, where President Fred Moore thanked them for their generosity. "Your leadership on this project inspired other donors and was vital to making it possible to have this field ready for the start of our football and soccer seasons this fall," said Moore. "We thank you and all of the generous donors who made this possible."
Other donors who were also recognized for their lead gifts were:
- Sherman Wollesen, Class of 1962, and his wife, Susan, Lawton.
- Wayne Forbes, Class of 1947, Storm Lake.
- Bob and Renee Larson, both Class of 1985, Naperville, Ill.
- Paul and Judy Launderville, owners of Midwest Field Turf, Denison.
Peterson Field provides a state-of-the-art playing facility for football, soccer, track and intramurals. The improvements are expected to enhance BVU's student recruiting efforts and enrich the fan experience at athletic events.
As funding becomes available, Buena Vista also plans other improvements to Peterson Field and J. Leslie Rollins Stadium, primarily field lighting which will enable the university to host its athletic events and intramurals in the evening, and to offer a modern new venue for district high school football, soccer, and track and field competition.
