On Monday September 19 the Cougars from AGWSR traveled to the Pit to take on the Rebels in a district cross over game. We had heard that this was a good group and they had beaten and played some really good teams and had done quite well in the early season. We were ready to roll as the bus pulled in.
The game was slow as each team really had trouble establishing themselves early on. The first quarter ended in a stand still but early in the second quarter the Cougars put together a drive after a miscue of ours. We then turned the ball over again and it cost us another score and we were down 14-0 at the half. Coaches Schulte, Trunck, Babinat, and McNew made some adjustments at the break and we were ready to get after the Cougars the second half.
Whatever these guys said at the break should be bottled up and sold. The Rebels came out with a fire and it burned the whole second half. We were flying around to the ball on defense and we moved the ball on offense. Our only issue is we are still turning the ball over way too much. If my calculations are correct, we turned the ball over 4 times in Cougar territory and twice we were inside of their 20 yard line. We had opportunities but the turnovers killed us. We went down by a final of 22-16 and this one was not over until the last buzzer sounded. The negative was of course the turnovers but the positive was how hard the kids fought and clawed their way back into this game. The effort, heart, and desire was almost unbelievable following last week. This is a great measuring stick to tell how hard these guys are working at getting better and what football means to them. It was an awesome display the second half. Keep it up and nice job to all of you.
Dustin Dinsdale had a very impressive line for the night. He lead us with 15 tackles, a blocked punt, caught 1 pass, and rushed 4 times for 26 yards. Jake Peters followed with 24 rushing yards, a TD and PAT run, and 9 tackles. Brady Kuehl had the best night of his young career going 7 of 15 for 137 yards and a TD. Shawn Dugan and Cameron Clark teamed up to make a tackle in our endzone for a safety to go along with their 5 and 2 other tackles. Wyatt Swanson caught 3 balls for 79 yards and a score while Phil Zimmerman caught 3 for 58. Braden Trepp and Pete Meyers also had very solid nights on both sides of the ball with 7 stops apiece on defense. Dirk Thesing and Tyler Bovy 3, Blake Kibe and Joey Linder 2, Bennett Petersen and Bryce Ehlers 1 all recorded tackles for the night. This drops us to 1-2 on the year but like I said there were a ton of positives coming out of this one. Good work everyone and keep building on this.
Our next action will be at Conrad on Monday October 3 at 6 p.m.. Hope to see you roaming the sidelines.
Fresh-Soph Rebel Football
Aplington Parkersburg made the trip to the Pit on Thursday September 22 to take on the Rebels in a fresh-soph game. This was a big game for us after establishing some momentum on Monday. Hopefully this would keep rolling.
We started slowly as A-P mounted a very impressive drive after a G-R punt. They did their typical smash mouth football and we didn't have an answer. They jumped out to an early 16-0 lead but we responded right before halftime as Jake Peters literally took the ball right out of the hands of an A-P running back and returned it 66 yards for a score. This play seemed to jump start us and we played some pretty good football the rest of the night. We were holding them defensively and our offense was moving the ball. Again the turnover bug cost us as we had 3 again tonight. A-P held on for a 30 -16 victory dropping us to 0-3 for the year. The second half of this game was virtually a dead heat as both teams were matching each other on both sides of the ball. I know the coaches were extremely happy with the effort and the execution the second half. This was the best game this group has played this year. Keep working hard and improving every time you take the field. Nice game to all of you.
Bennett Petersen lead the way with 91 yards on 14 carries with a TD and a couple of 2 point PAT runs. Joey Linder lead us with a career high 12 tackles. Braden Trepp added 10 stops followed closely by Jake and Luke Holman with 8 each. Logan Phillips 7, Bryce Ehlers and Logan Flamme 5, Shawn Dugan and Cameron Clark 3, Austin Lott, Wyatt Swanson, Blake Kibe, and Phil Zimmerman each had 2 added to Bennett and Dirk Thesing's 1 each to finish off our tackles.
Our next showdown will be with Mustangs from East Marshall on Thursday October 6 at the Pit. This game will start immediately after the junior high games with Grundy Center. Game time will be around 6:45 or so. Hope to see you roaming the sidelines.
