Rebel Volleyball Begins Conference Play

September 17, 2011
Marcia Koester

The first week of September brought us our first full week of volleyball. On Tuesday night we traveled to Le Grand to take on the Mustangs. We came home with our first conference win sweeping East Marshall in three sets. The Rebels had a good night of serving and are still working on getting use to each other on the floor.

On Thursday night, AGWSR came to Reinbeck. The Rebels got their second conference win in three straight games. The girls won with scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-23. The girls played hard for most of the night but are still working on not making mental mistakes. Our passing looked really good for the night with Erin, Addi and Madi doing most of it. We have a couple of rotations to work on the problem areas which we will do this week in practice. In the second game Carrie's elbow was really hurting so we did not play her in the third game. Elli Stoakes stepped in and did a nice job helping the team out especially since she doesn't practice with the varsity every night. The assists were divided between Emily Stoakes with 9, Taylor Flamme 8 and Shelton Hatch with 7. Emily Dinsdale led the team with 8 kills and was 8-9 serving with 2 aces. Emily Stoakes had 7 kills, 2 blocks and went 8-10 serving with 2 aces. Jenna led the team with 3 blocks, went 9 for 9 serving with 1 ace and had 4 kills. Shelton led the team with 7 aces on 14-16 serving and 4 kills. Addi went 16-16 serving with 3 aces, had 3 kills and 16 digs. Erin led the team with 14 digs. Congratulations girls on being 2-0 in the conference!

The team had one night of practice to prepare for the South Hardin Tournament without Carrie Shouse, as she will be out with an elbow injury for only a little while we hope. So after seeing the girls practice it was decided to move Emily Dinsdale to the middle and put Ellie Stoakes on the outside. Emily did a good job on Saturday adjusting to the middle and Ellie stepped up to the roll on the outside without much practice. We went 2 & 2 for the day. Our first match was against Forest City and we fought hard but lost the first one 19-21, then came back to win the next two 21-10 & 16-14. Next up was Colo Nesco and it took us three to beat them also. The scores were 21-14, 17-21 & 15-7. After eating we played Oelwein and lost to them in three with scores of 13-21, 21-16 and 13-15. So we pulled out of pool play in second and played South Hardin. We lost this hard fought battle in three games with scores of 18-25, 25-16 & 13-15. This was probably the most disappointing loss of the day. We now know what we have to do to beat them in the conference. The team is improving, but we have a long ways to go before the end of the season to be ready for regionals. Stat highlights are: Addi had 13 kills, 33 digs and went 36-38 with 4 aces; Shelton had 6 kills, 17 assists and went 39-42 serving with 4 aces; Ellie had 14 kills; Erin had 42 digs and went 9 for 9 serving with 1 ace; Emily D. had 32 kills, 5 blocks and went 30-31 serving with 3 aces; Madi had 18 digs and went 21-25 serving with 1 ace; Emily S. had 24 kills, 5 blocks, 40 assist, 23 digs and went 30 for 30 serving with 5 aces; Jenna had 9 kills, 6 blocks and went 28-30 serving with 3 aces; and Taylor F. had 27 assists.

We have a tough schedule again next week as we travel to the newcomers in the conference, South Tama, on Tuesday night. Then on Saturday we host our own tournament with #4 rated Dike-New Hartford as one of the eight teams. This should be a test for the girls to see where we are as a team going into the second week of September.
