Freshman/Sophomore football

September 17, 2011
Reinbeck Courier

Thursday September 8 kicked off another season for our fresh-soph kids. This year will be a little different because of we will need to play some of our sophs on these nights. We did this some last year and now it is becoming more of a necessity. It gives the kids another opportunity to play which is always good. We went north to take on our rivals from Dike-New Hartford. You always will be in for a battle when these two teams get together no matter what level it is. It is just a good, clean rivalry that everyone is always involved in and always has lots of fun with it. This game would not disappoint.

The Rebels just really did not get a whole lot going in this match-up. We would put together a nice drive and then a penalty or turnover or a missed assignment would cost us opportunities for some big plays. We just weren't able to finish drives. On the other side DNH had more than there share of big plays and these plays were the difference. We came out on the short end of this one by a 22-8 score. The kids played hard but on this day it just wasn't enough.

Bennett Petersen scored our only points on a 6 yard TD run and he also scored the 2 point conversion for our 8 points. As a team we accumulated 103 yards rushing and 23 yards passing. Needless to say the DNH defense was pretty stout. Our defense played well but did give up some big plays that cost us field position and also scores. These guys will continue to work hard and they will improve every time out on the field. This is a good group and it will be fun watching them grow into a good football team.

Braden Trepp led the way defensively with 9 stops and a fumble recovery. He was followed by Shawn Dugan and Joey Linder with 5 tackles each. Jake Peters and Dustin Dinsdale 4, Dirk Thesing, Logan Flamme, and Cameron Clark 2, Bennett, Luke Holman, Logan Phillips, and Tyler Bovy all had 1 tackle for us versus DNH. Jake also recovered a fumble and Dustin had an interception to finish off our defensive stat line. Offensively Jake had 55 yards on the ground followed by Bennett's 41 and a score. Brady Kuehl completed 4 balls for 23 yards with Jake, Austin Lott, and Dustin hauling them in for the yardage.

Our next action will be Thursday September 22 at the Pit against the Falcons from A-P. This game will follow a junior high match-up with Hudson so it would be a perfect time to catch the future of G-R football. The junior high games will get under way at 4:00 so the Fresh-Soph should be on the field by 6:45 or so. See you on the sidelines.
