G-R volleyball begins strong

September 10, 2011
Marcia Koester

The 2011 Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball season has begun. The girls have chosen the motto; Lock Load and Explode. The seniors chose this motto and we feel it fits them really well as they are bringing a lot of experience to the team. We are excited for the year as their goals are set high again this year!

This year the team has five seniors to lead us to success. They are: Emily Dinsdale, Addi Kickbush, Jenna Roeding, Carrie Shouse and Emily Stoakes. Six juniors will help fill out three teams for us. They are: Bobbi Beck, Madi Corwin, Sidney Dilly, Taylor Flamme, Erin Wentzien and Allysen White. Our nine sophomores will add depth to our program. The sophomores are: Brooke Boyle, Alyssa Christopher, Britney Keller, Mikayala Knaack, Kaitlin Mohlis, Jayde Price, Ellie Stoakes, Chelsea Taylor and Taylor Weida. There are seven freshmen to join us this year. They are: Hanna Christopher, Kyleah Dugan, Bailea Evenson, Shelton Hatch, Ashley Moore, Jenny Schildroth and Aloyna Strohbehn.

We are looking forward to an exciting volleyball season. The volleyball team is full of talented ladies again this year. The ladies have been working extremely hard the month of August. The JV and Varsity teams went to Marshalltown Team Camp on August 1st and 2nd. Each team played each day and got valuable court time against different teams. The varsity girls went to Central Team Camp on August 5th and 6th. At this one we played mostly bigger schools and some great competition. We worked hard at trying to find the right combinations to put on the court. We then started practice for everyone on August 8th and have been working hard for three weeks in a hot gym. It was good to have a scrimmage for the Fall Sports Kickoff on the 19th to showcase our hard work. The varsity team went to the KGRN Scrimmage at Grinnell on the 20th and we saw much improvement from Central Camp.

Our first game was Thursday, September 1st, in a very hot gym! The girls were anxious to play a match as many teams had already played earlier in the week. Wapsie Valley is always a much disciplined team with great fundamentals. We fought hard all night and won 3 games to 1, with scores of 25-23, 9-25, 28-26 and 25-23. As you can see from the scores they were all close games except that 2nd one that we will erase from our memory! I was very proud of the team for beating one of the top three teams from the east side of our conference. These girls never gave up all night. I was worried about the heat and if we were in good enough shape, but they were and battled through to the end. Besides the play of the girls, the other excitement of the night was the chant of Jerry by the crowd to net the bat. Thanks Jerry! Stats for the night were: Emily Stoakes had 7 kills, 13 assists, 4 blocks and was 23-24 with 3 aces. Emily Dinsdale had 7 kills and was 10-13 with 2 aces. Addi Kickbush and Jenna Roeding had 6 kills a piece and Jenna had 4 blocks. Erin Wentzien had 13 digs and went 17-18 with 2 aces. Shelton Hatch went 15-17 with 3 aces and Taylor Flamme had 7 assists. Madi Corwin helped out in the back row.

Congratulations girls on a great victory over Wapsie Valley! We hope you can make it to our next home game on Thursday, August 8th as we play AGWSR and cheer the girls on. JV and FROSH start at 6:00 with the Varsity to follow around 7:30.
