Rebels retain Victory Bell with 35-7 over Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER - Colby Luethje scored two short touchdown runs in the first half and Parker Bolt had a hand in two long TD plays in the second half as Gladbrook-Reinbeck retained possession of the 'Victory Bell' with a 35-7 triumph over Grundy Center in non-district football on Friday.

The Rebels (2-0) got on the scoreboard first by thwarting a Grundy Center drive into the red zone as Jackson Clark returned an interception 80 yards for a score. Luethje's TD runs of 1 and 5 yards made it 20-0 in G-R's favor at the half.

Joel Rust scored the only Grundy Center (1-2) touchdown on a 3-yard run in the third quarter to get the Spartans within 20-7, but G-R held them out of the end zone the rest of the way.

Bolt scrambled 43 yards for another G-R score and then hooked up with Joe Zimmerman for a 58-yard TD pass to cap the scoring.

Bolt finished 10-for-16 for 172 yards and also rushed four times for 57 yards. Ryan Strohbehn led the Rebel rushing attack with 61 yards and Luethje added 54. Cobren Bird had four catches for 54 yards to lead the G-R receivers.

Cody Cole rushed 18 times for 94 yards for Grundy Center, which lost the annual rivalry game with G-R for the seventh time in their last eight meetings.

Rust was 8-for-20 passing for 62 yards, with Nathan Schmadeke making two catches for 27 yards before leaving with an injury. Schmadeke also intercepted Bolt in Grundy Center's second straight loss.

Brady Billerbeck posted 18 tackles and a fumble recovery to lead the Rebel defense, which held the Spartans to 198 yards of total offense.
