Finish Line

May 21, 2011
Coach Shelli Smoldt

On Thursday we headed to Hudson for our district track meet. We had two things going for us right off the start. First, it was close so traveling would not be a factor and secondly we were going to get to run on a familiar track. Thursday came and we were blessed to have a third factor on our side and that was the weather. It was the most perfect day to run. We have always performed our best in warm, sunny weather.

Our district was one of the toughest again so we knew we would have to run the best of the season and place no less than second in the relays and individual events in order to make it to state. To no surprise, the girls all came prepared to perform with everyone meeting new PR's and improving the overall times of every event. I was so proud of them all as they showed everyone and themselves what dedication and hard work can achieve. This has been just a great group of girls to coach and it is so nice to see the smiles on their faces when they have accomplished their individual goals and achieved a new PR.

Overall as a team we finished 6th place out of 12 teams so I was extremely proud of the girls. Small numbers can accomplish a lot with hard work and determination!

Taking home a district medal placing 5th was the 4X800 Meter Relay team. The team ran the best time of the season with a time of 11:05.55. The team consisted of Sonya Beichley, Britney Keller, Alyssa Gauthier and Lauren Gauthier.

In the 100 Meter Dash, Mikayla Knaack captured 11th place overall while Jill Schildroth ran the best of her time all season with a 15.42.

In the 200 Meter Dash we had two medal finishers. Rachael Cheeseman took home the 2nd place medal with a time of 26.87 and Stephanie Dilly took home the 5th place medal with a time of 28.41.

In the 400 Meter Dash we again captured two medal finishers. Rachael Cheeseman took 2nd place with a time of 59.88 and Stephanie Dilly ran the best time of her season with a time of 1:02.90 taking the 3rd place medal.

In the 800 Meter Run the Gauthier girls ran hard and competed to the end run. Alyssa ran a very good race and took 10th place overall. Lauren ran her best time of the season with a time 2:48.51 taking 15th place overall.

The 4X100 and the 4X200 Meter Relay teams also performed the best of the season. The 4X100 Meter Relay team of Mikayla Knaack, Sidney Dilly, Britney Keller and Ellie Stoakes finished with a time of 56.20. The 4X200 team of Mikayla Knaack, Sidney Dilly, Britney Keller and Abbie Walton finished with a time of 1:59.31.

In the 4X400 Meter Relay race we knew this was going to be a tough one as this was a loaded district for this race. The team came out and did exactly what they were asked to do and that was if they couldn't get first then they had to get second place and that is what they did. They ran a tough race from start to finish and were able to bring home the second place medal. The team consisted of Sonya Beichley, Alyssa Christopher, Stephanie Dilly and Rachael Cheeseman. They finished with a season best time of 4:12.46.

The Sprint Medley was another tough race for us as we knew we were going to have to chip off at least 2 seconds from our time in order for us to even have a chance at qualifying for state. Again, to no surprise the girls did it. The combination of each leg running their best along with smooth handoff's and Rachael Cheeseman's 59 second anchor leg allowed them to capture the 2nd place district medal and turn in a time of 1:54.26. The team consisted of Stephanie Dilly, Sidney Dilly, Alyssa Christopher and Rachael Cheeseman.

In the long jump we took the 12th and 14th place overall. Mikayla Knaack captured 12th place and Britney Keller took the 14th place.

In the 400 Meter Hurdles Ellie Stoakes came out strong from the blocks and finished hard to the end. This was only Ellie's third time for running this race and with her performance at districts showed that she could be a tough contender in the future. Ellie finished 12th overall with a PR time of 1:16.83.

The Distance Medley Relay Team also took home the 8th place district medal with a time of 4:50.68. The team consisted of Sidney Dilly, Ellie Stoakes, Abbie Walton and Alyssa Christopher.

We patiently waited for the State Meet Qualifying list it finally arrived late on Friday night. We qualified 4 events for the 2011 State Track Meet and are sitting well in each of them to be able to medal at state.

A note to my five seniors I want to thank you all for the leadership, motivation, positive attitude and most importantly your work ethic that you have shown not only to me but to all the underclassmen. You have left your mark for all the underclassmen to continue the success. Best of luck to each and everyone one of you and you will certainly be missed!

Lastly, I would just like to thank all the girls for their daily hard work in practice, their great attitudes even when it's tough and for their dedication to the sport. As I always say only the strong survive this sport and you all should be proud of yourselves for being a track athlete. Not everyone can do or endure this sport and you have proven by being a part of track that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to! I am proud of each and every one of you. Great job and thank you! Keep on running.
