WAVERLY, Iowa A split April 9 helped Wartburg College gain a key series win over Iowa Conference leader Simpson at Hertel Field.
Sophomore starting pitcher Scott Benson of Reinbeck looked to follow-up Brad Watson's gem on Friday with one of his own. And he did. Benson fired a complete-game, one-hit, shutout against the Storm (15-7, 8-2 IIAC). He did so in quick fashion, too, throwing only 77 pitches while striking out three and walking one. The pitcher had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings until Simpson's Tyler Crandell lined a single to center field.
The offense, in the 4-0 victory for Wartburg (13-13, 6-5) came early from senior outfielder Patrick Grau of Elkader with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. Freshman infielder Michael Schinstock of Urbandale and sophomore outfielder Andrew Krehbiel of Donnellson each tallied two hits.
Game two needed extra innings, as the two sides battled through nine instead of the regularly scheduled seven. The Storm took a 2-1 lead into the bottom half of the sixth, but senior catcher/pitcher Nate Rost of Faribault, Minn., put the Knights ahead 3-2 with a two-run shot over the left field fence. However, Simpson wouldn't back down as they tallied a run in the top of the seventh to send the game to extras and eventually went on to win 6-3.
