John Reid Holst was born in Anamosa, Iowa on June 15, 1945 to Marvin and Ruth Holst of Center Junction, Iowa. He attended school in Jones County and graduated from Midland High School in 1963. He attended Iowa State University and took classes in the Farm Management program. He returned to the farm of his grandparents and parents to raise a family of his own. He married Kathleen (Kathy) Renken in 1969 and together they raised four children, Jason (wife Michelle), Beth Hennes (husband Pat), Austin (wife Erin), and Autumn Craig (husband Travis).
John farmed with his father and brother, Gary, for many years before moving to the Waterloo area in 1985, eventually moving to Reinbeck in 2008. While living in the Waterloo area, he worked as a commodities broker and eventually began working with people with disabilities. John was a devoted helper to many people with disabilities both at work and in his personal life. He enjoyed the outdoors and open spaces, especially favoring summer vacations in the Minnesota north woods, either alone with Kathy or surrounded by his children and five grandsons.
John was preceded in death by his father and brothers, Robert and Gary. He is survived by his wife, mother, four children and their spouses, and five grandsons.
