Jarold Lee Lister was born January 31, 1927 at Plano, Iowa, the son of Emory and Maud McGavern Lister. He received his education at Plano and graduated from Promise City, Iowa High School in 1945. Following high school he entered the United States Army and served his country until his discharge in 1947. On August 24, 1947 he was united in marriage to Aileen Scott at the Plano Christian Church. He then returned to further his education at Indian Hills Junior College in Centerville graduating in 1949. He continued his education at Drake University in Des Moines receiving his Bachelor Degree in 1951 and his Masters in 1960. Jerry taught and coached at Beech Community School, Milo Community School, Southeast Warren Community School before moving to Traer in 1962 where he taught Social Studies and coached at the North Tama Schools retiring from teaching in 1988 and coaching in 1994. A large part of Jerry's life was coaching basketball and baseball in those communities. Over the years he was honored with many awards and accomplishments which included coaching the basketball and baseball All Star games. He was voted Iowa High School District Coach of the Year five times and in 1986 the Iowa High School 2A Baseball Coach of the Year. In 1983 he was inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Association Hall of Fame and remains one of the coaches in Iowa with the most wins in baseball history. Coach Lister was especially honored by the dedication of the J. L. Lister Baseball Field in Traer. He also was very active in other community activities which included being a charter member of the Milo Lions Club, memberships in the North Tama EA, ISEA, NEA and High School Baseball and Basketball Coaches Association. He also was an active member of the Traer United Methodist Church and Traer American Legion. Jerry's death came at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at the age of 83 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Harold and sisters Edith Lister Ball, Ila Lister Brindle Erlewine. He is survived by his wife Aileen, daughters Rebecca Lister Zozaya and husband Reinaldo of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and Rozella Lister Stull and husband John of Reinbeck, granddaughters, Megan Stull (Kevin Deeny) of Dubuque, Iowa and Melissa Stull (Jason Burgart) of Minneapolis and a great granddaughter Ella Deeny. Visitation was held on Sunday, July 18, 2010 form 2-6 PM and services 10:30 AM Monday, July 19, 2010 all at the United Methodist Church 512 4th St Traer, Iowa, burial followed at the Buckingham Cemetery in Traer.
