10 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 3, 2000 Fourteen dedicated community members have been trained to serve as reading tutors at Reinbeck Elementary School to help students improve their reading skills. Emil E. Vogt, 87, formerly of Dinsdale and Reinbeck, now of Wisconsin, died Jan. 25 at King, Wis. Darlene Hudson, 71, Clinton, died Jan. 25 at a hospital in Rochester, Minn. Earl Fleener, 89, Grundy Center, passed away Jan. 17 at the Grundy Care Center. James Wilson, 78, Traer, died Jan. 27 at Covenant Medical Center. George Klein, 78, Grundy Center, died Jan. 30 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital. Dale Fink, 74, Macon, Mo. passed away Jan. 19 at a Veteran's Hospital in Columbia, Mo. Mr. & Mrs. Roger Kiewiet will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on Feb. 20. 20 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 15, 1990 Reinbeck's oldest citizen, Isabelle Claussen, 105, died Feb. 9. Her death was attributed to old age. Michelle Ewers and G. Andrew Monk exchanged wedding vows on Dec. 30, 1989. Mr. & Mrs. Craig Reinking are parents of a daughter born Feb. 2. Mr. & Mrs. Scott Harms are parents of a daughter born Feb. 4. Mr. & Mrs. Dave Owen of New Hartford are parents of a son born Feb. 11. Eleanor Willer, 63, Reinbeck, died at her home on Feb. 9 after choking on a piece of meat while eating her noon meal. Elwyn Mauck, 79, Reinbeck died Feb. 10 of natural causes. Harlan Klosterboer, 64, Grundy Center, died Feb. 9. 30 YEARS AGO FEB. 21, 1980 The Reinbeck Community School Board approved the 1980-81 school budget which provided a 12% across the board pay raise for all personnel. Eric Swaney was appointed a city council member to fill a vacancy created by the death of Don C. Petersen. Fire gutted the Reinbeck Veterinary Clinic office bldg. The building was undergoing extensive repairs caused by damage when a car struck it several weeks earlier. Thieves entered the George Schildroth home 5 miles northwest of Reinbeck and made off with a large amount of household appliances and some cash. Both drivers escaped serious injuries when their pickups collided on D-53 south of Reinbeck. Drivers were Mike Staker and Patricia McCreery of Gladbrook. Staker made a left turn into a farm field in front of the McCreery vehicle. Reinbeck Ramettes girls basketball team advances to district after winning the sectionals in a thrilling 64-62 game at LeGrand. 40 YEARS AGO FEB. 19, 1970 Twenty-seven new automatic voting machines arrived in Grundy Co. this past weekend and auditor, Wilbur Rust, directed their delivery to the county's 19 polling places. The new machines cost a total of $52,056. The County Board of Supervisors held a bid letting last week at which they purchased several vehicles. Dell Williams Ford-Mercury of Grundy Center was low bidder on 3 half-ton pickups and 3 two-ton trucks. Jim Denning of Reinbeck was the low bidder on an automobile. Mr. & Mrs. William Craig will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on Feb. 22 at the memorial Bldg. Mrs. Myrtle Ritchey, 74, died Feb. 12 at Schoitz Hospital. Mr. & Mrs. Al Spillman of Minneapolis, are parents of a son born Feb. 13. Vicky Paige and Steven J. Arends were united in marriage on Feb. 14 at the United Presbyterian Ch. in Reinbeck. Reinbeck City employees, Dale Storjohann and Beryl Manlick cut down some diseased elm trees at the Reinbeck Elmwood Park. 50 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY, 1960 Grundy Mutual Ins. Association had nearly $54 million of insurance in force at the close of last year. John Fahrer, southwest of Reinbeck, is holding a closing-out sale on Feb. 22. Mrs. Don Hoeppner of Oakland, Iowa died of cancer on Feb. 17. Mr. & Mrs. Keneneth Plaehn have sold their home in the Plaehn Addition to Mr. & Mrs. Gayle Lorenz for $6,150. The Plaehns will move to their newly erected home. Nu-Pak production to begin within the next 7 to 10 days. Robert Frahm of the Voorhies neighborhood has purchased the stock and business of the Blacksmith and Machine Shop owned by Robert Palmer. Donald Mohr's Berkshire sow won Reserve Champion at the Iowa Berkshire Breeder's Association Show and Sale at Webster City. Mr. & Mrs. Marlin Siefken are parents of a daughter born Feb. 13. Mr. & Mrs. James Keith are parents of a daughter born Feb. 16. Mr. & Mrs. Wendell Eike are parents of a daughter born Feb. 16. 60 YEARS AGO FEB. 1950 John Vest, 68, Dinsdale, died of a heart attack on Feb. 9. Leonard Raffensperger, former Reinbeck football coach, is the new head coach at the University of Iowa. Mrs. Herman Wrage, 74, died at Long Beach, Calif. on Feb. 10. Carroll (Jim) Engelkes, announces he wishes to seek the nomination for County Attorney in Grundy Co. the Republican ticket in the June Primaries. Ed Hanisch and Elmer Lorenz, two area farmers, are going to have closing-out sales on Feb. 18 and Feb. 21, respectively. Following a weekend of sunshine and mild weather, the Reinbeck area was visited by winter's worst storm of the season. 11" of new snow with winds of 35 mph on Sunday night and Monday, Feb. 12 and 13. Mr. & Mrs. Carl Sams are parents of a daughter born Feb. 12. Capt. and Mrs. Wm. Evans of Gesson, Germany, are parents of a daughter born Feb. 11. Mrs. Evans is the former Claire Alice Palmer. Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Lorenz are parents of a son born Feb. 8. Mr. & Mrs. Clayton Dunham celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Feb. 11. 70 YEARS AGO FEB. 1940 Bertram L. Robinson, 68, a longtime businessman and former mayor of Reinbeck, died at his home on Feb. 9. J.C. Wollensen, postmaster and merchant in Lincoln, ends long service as postmaster of 25 years. Mr. Skare is appointed temporary postmaster. Ethel Bern and Walter Thede were married on Feb. 10th. E.M. (Skeet) Robinson disposed of the stock and accessories of the D-X Service Station to Jurgen Thiel, located at Main and Canary Streets (now Broad St.) Henry Plaehn southwest of town, lost a double garage and chicken house in a fire on Feb. 15. |
