Ellen Besch, 93, Reinbeck, formerly of Elma and Charles City, died Saturday, December 26, 2009 at Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Reinbeck.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville with burial in Riverside Cemetery, next to her husband. Visitation was held on Wednesday until time of services. Rev. Terry Plocher will officiate.
Ellen Ruth Besch was born Jan. 24, 1916 in Belmond, IA, the daughter of Rudolph and Gertrude (Tjaden) Saatoff. She attended school in Burt, IA and graduated with the class of 1934. She valued education enough that she went to NICC in Calmar in 1971 for nursing.
On September 13, 1939, Ellen was united in marriage to John Joseph Besch at Ledyard, IA. They made their home on a farm west of Elma. In 1959 John died and Ellen stayed on the farm until 1974 then moved to Charles City where she was employed by the Salsbury Baptist Nursing Home as a LPN. In 2004, she moved to Parkview Manor Nursing Home to be close to her daughter and family.
Ellen enjoyed reading, playing cards, taking care of flowers and traveling. She also loved having her dog, but most of all, Ellen loved spending time with her family. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and enjoyed having them come to visit.
She is survived by a daughter, LaRee and her husband, Wade VahHauen of Reinbeck, their children: Reece VanHauen of Cedar Rapids and Britny VanHauen of Cedar Falls; a sister-in-law Theresa Lingle of Algona, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and cousins.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, a sister, Bernice Dogotch, two brothers, Ervin and Lloyd Saatoff and her sisters and brothers-in-law.
