On Veteran's Day Ken Kenyon, Larry Mulder and Kandie Vaughn, all members of Reinbeck's American Legion Post 242 met in the morning at Westview Estates and in the afternoon at Parkview Manor. Kenyon and Mulder presented Westview with a U.S. flag that was donated by Senator Chuck Grassley. This flag flew over the state capitol building. Irma Thede, who helped serve food and beverages at the event explained that it all came about when Gary Karkosh attempted to trim a frayed thread from their previous flag. They contacted Senator Grassley and he was able to supply the new flag.

Westview residents, numerous Veterans and the general public listened as Kenyon and Vaughn gave a presentation in honor of United States Veterans. Many tears were shed in remembrance of loved ones lost and loved ones who remain.

Kandie Vaughn showed the audience a film that the Legion wishes to share with fifth through twelfth grades at schools in the community and surrounding area. The film entitled, For Which it Stands explains the importance of the United States Flag and what it represents to the country. She also shared with the community a short film honoring the life of her son Travis Vaughn and Katie Soenksen, soldiers who lost their young lives in Afghanistan.

Many Veterans stood and shared their experiences serving our nation. Harold Peterson said, "I lived through it, which I'm happy for. Maybe a lot of people aren't, but I am."

The same presentation was presented to the residents at Parkview nursing home in the afternoon.
