Beverly Mae Joens Claussen, died August 22 at her home in Grimes after an extended illness. Born on May 3, 1929, in Traer, Bev was the oldest child of Hazel and Ted Joens. She graduated from Traer High School in 1947 and continued her education at Kendall College in Chicago. In 1950, she married Leland Claussen and they moved to a farm northwest of Traer, where they raised their seven children. In 1986, they moved to Des Moines. During this time, she was an active member of the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church. From 1980 to 1986, she was Activity Director at the Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Reinbeck.
In addition to her husband and parents, Bev was preceded in death by a brother, Skip Joens. She is survived by three brothers: Bob Joens of Houston, Missouri, Ted Joens of Montrose, Colo., and Gordon Joens of Tulsa, Oklahoma; six daughters: Connie Claussen (Jay Jones) of Tacoma, Washington, Laurie Wright of Denver, Lisa Burns (David Burns) of Ithaca, New York, Sara Claussen (John Mangano) of Baltimore, Maryland, Leann Goldsmith (Scott Goldsmith) of Grimes, and Julie Claussen (David Philipp) of Champaign, Ill., one son, Matthew Claussen (Amy Herdy) of Louisville, Colo.; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Water Purification Project of Our Sister Parish Mission in Berlin, El Salvador or the Grimes Public Library.
Visitation was at Brooks Funeral Care in Clive on Monday, August 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral service was held at Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church at 410 South 3rd Street in Grimes.
