10 YEARS AGO AUGUST 19, 1999 There will be a limited number of permits available for bow hunting in Grundy Co. Householders are urged to begin getting ready for another Grundy Co. toxic cleanup day set for Sept. 18. Grundy Co. Conservation to hold a Prairie Walk on Aug. 26. 20th annual Pioneer Craft Fair is set for Sunday, Sept. 12 in Morrison. Dike water skier, Dana Dunkelberger, son of Bill & Linda Dunkelberger, Dike, began water skiing professionally for Sea World in San Antonio, TX. Mr. & Mrs. Darwin Lynch of Gladbrook will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on August 28 in Gladbrook. Jodi Cramer and Mark Appel announce upcoming wedding on Oct. 2. Laine Robinson and David Lercher are planning an Oct. 9 wedding at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Heather Hoover and Chad Gould were married June 26 in Marshalltown. Kimberly Heithoff and Jeffrey Bohling were married May 22 in Cedar Rapids. Janice Bunz, 59, Cedar Falls, passed away on Aug. 14 at her home. Vernon Delfs, 86, Cedar Falls, died Aug. 13 at Sartori Hospital. 20 YEARS AGO AUGUST 31, 1989 Pamela Hamann and Kenneth J. Fogt were married on August 12 at the United Methodist Church. Jill Andersen and Tim Caples exchanged vows on August 12 at the United Methodist Church. Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Schildroth observed their 25th wedding anniversary on Sept. 3. They were married Sept. 3, 1964 at the United Church of Christ. Mr. & Mrs. Carl Dudden will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 10. They were married Sept. 14, 1939 in Holland. Virgil Paige, 89, Dike, received special recognition for his 70-years of membership in the American Legion. Virgil Nielsen, 79, Dike, died August 24, at Sartori Hospital. Lucille Draper, 80, Traer, died August 26 at Allen Hospital. 30 YEARS AGO SEPT. 6, 1979 Construction begins on the new bridge on T-55 near Oak Leaf Country Club. Grundy County's "Black Gold" is soaring in value. A 159 acre improved farm in German Twp. has been sold for $3,725 per acre. School board elections will be held with 2 incumbents, Wm. Heithoff, Jr. and Donald Billerbeck seeking re-election. Cal Swanson, Jr. and Christina Walter of Waterloo were married on Aug. 18. Mark Volkens and Diana Halverson were united in marriage on Aug. 25. Debra Stensland was an entrant in the 4-H State Fair Clothing Review. Minnie Linder, 88, died Sept. 3 at Parkview Nursing Home. A closing out farm auction for Henry Junge Estate will be held on Sept. 8. Mr. & Mrs. Dean Thede are parents of a daughter born Sept. 3. Mr. & Mrs. John Hooper purchased Helen Nissan home at 406 Pine for $30,000. Mr. & Mrs. Bill Clark, Maxwell, have purchased the Gary Frahm home at 120 Clark for $50,000. 40 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 4, 1969 Richard Lewis, 39, rural Reinbeck, died from burns he suffered on the job at the Standard Oil Fertilizer plant in Reinbeck. Members of the Reinbeck Lions Club are selling tickets to the annual "chicken supper" to be held on Saturday, Sept. 13. Thomas Ross, 77, Grundy Center, died at the Evangelical Hospital in Marshalltown. Elizabeth Utterback and Steven Dowd exchanged vows on August 31 at the First Presbyterian Church in Toledo. Mr. & Mrs. Richard Nelson are parents of a son born Aug. 31 at Allen Hospital. Mr. & Mrs. William Palmer are parents of a daughter born Aug. 26. Doc's Drive-In will close for the season on Monday, Sept. 8. Grundy Center funeral director George Abbas, 37, died unexpectedly on Aug. 26 at Allen Hospital. Rev. David Williams, new pastor for the United Church of Christ will begin his pastorate on Sunday, Sept. 7. Carolyn Cooper and John Mikkelsen exchanged marriage vows in Garnish, Germany, on Aug. 19. The Grundy Center School Board has revealed the ?oor plans for the new high school addition. A $945,000 bond issue to ?nance the building was approved by voters in December. Contracts are to be let Oct. 1, with a completion date set for the 1971-72 school year. 50 YEARS AGO SEPT. 1959 E.A. Mitchell, who exhibited 14 short-horn cattle at the State Fair, showed Senior and Grand Champion female, Cloverton Craggroe. They also showed Reserve Grand Champion in the short-horn class, besides receiving 10 blue ribbons. Mr. & Mrs. Joe Dinnebier sold their 134 acre farm to Harris Cold for $450 an acre, then purchased the John Mumm Estate house in east Reinbeck for $6,500. A total of 713 students resumed classes on Monday, Aug. 31. Reinbeck has been chosen as the site for Special Education class. Students from Grundy Center, Hudson and Reinbeck will hold their class in the basement of the Reinbeck Public Library. Reinbeck now has a new partnership, two brothers, Donald and Robert Stephan. They will manage Stephan's D-X Station. Bob has been bookkeeper and parts man at the Reinbeck Motor Co. and Don has been managing the station for several months. Jane Cavanaugh, Reinbeck, 4-H member showed the Reserve Champson lightweight market lamb at the Iowa State Fair. She also received a blue ribbon in the heavyweight market lamb judging. Mr. & Mrs. Jack Ramsey of Lincoln, are parents of a son born Aug. 22. Mr. & Mrs. Irwin Maas of Gladbrook are parents of a girl born Aug. 27. Mr. & Mrs. Don Peters are parents of a son born Aug. 27. 60 YEARS AGO SEPT. 1949 Warren Franklin sold his vacant lot north of the theater to the Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. for $850. They in turned leased it to Marts Motor Co. to exhibit used cars. Mr. & Mrs. Lyman Mason sold their new home on west Main St. to Mrs. Catherine Kaufman of Austin, MN. for $7,300. Mr. & Mrs. John Dugan have purchased a building lot from Sofus Larsen for $600. Everett Frink & Associates to stage Tractor Rodeo on Labor Day at the school grounds. Reinbeck Canning Co. completed sweet corn pack on Aug. 30. This was one of the shortest seasons in history with 50,000 cases. Reinbeck Consolidated School opened on Monday, Aug. 29 with a record enrollment of 526 students. Celebrate Labor Day in Reinbeck on Monday, Sept. 5 with carnival rides, parade, ball games, dance and free acts. Grundy Co. has 49 rural schools in operation this year. Mr. & Mrs. Ray Boege are parents of a son born August 29. Mr. & Mrs. Don Hanisch of Waterloo are parents of a daughter born Aug. 30. Mrs. Hanisch is the former Rachel Bieber. 70 YEARS AGO SEPT. 1939 The Reinbeck Canning Co., according to Tom Evans, Manager, finished its shortest season on record which was 8 days. Twenty-four thousand cases of good quality corn was canned. Leota Driscoll of LaPorte City was married to Roger Rickert on Aug. 26. Harris Porter and sons, Donald and Howard, have completed the building of a miniature Farmall tractor. They will exhibit it in the Labor Day parade. The 64th annual Grundy Co. Fair opens for 3 big days, Sept. 6,7, and 8 at the Fairgrounds in Grundy Center. Free drawing for a Ford V-8 and an electric refrigerator. Free admission to the Grandstand each afternoon. 80 YEARS AGO SEPT. 1929 Grundy Co. is promised paving of No. 90 through the county next year. No. 59, south of Hudson, to intersection with No. 90, is also on next year's program. The Morrison Public School will open on Monday, Sept. 9th. Three concession stand operators at Reinbeck's Labor Day celebration, were fined $110. in Mayor Robinson's court for gambling. Mr. & Mrs. Robert Jackson are parents of a daughter born Sept. 2. In a deal closed last week, Oscar Andersen of Dike, became a partner in the Watters Auto Co. garage in Dike. A barn, chicken house and shed on the former Andy Osman farm, two miles west of Hudson, now owned by O.G. Mosley, were destroyed by fire on Sept. 2. Total loss was about $1,500. |
