JULY 22, 1999

City of Reinbeck population shows an increase in 1998 to 1,611 up by 6.

Mr. & Mrs. Tom Emmett will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on July 20.

Mr. & Mrs. Darwin Heltibridle will be honored with a card shower for their 35th wedding anniversary on July 24.

Minnie Meyer, 91, Grundy Center, passed away on July 13 at the Grundy Co. Hospital.

LeRoy Everhart, 68, Grundy Center, passed away July 13 at his home.

Marilyn Bartling, 60, Toledo, died July 14 at the Belle Plaine Nursing Home.

Jean Stout, 56, Oskaloosa, died July 18 in Oskaloosa.

On July 19 a one vehicle accident took the life of Kaye Rippentrop of Cedar Falls when she was thrown from a vehicle driven by her husband Patrick.

AUGUST 3, 1989

Beatrice Bryant, 82, Reinbeck, died July 30 at Parkview Manor.

Gary Vogt, 51, Waterloo, died July 30 at his home of heart failure.

Jennie Venenga, 93, Grundy Center, died July 26, at the long-term care unit in the Grundy Co.

Hospital.

Harold Eiklenborg, 66, Dike, died July 26 of an apparent heart attack.

Two Hudson men were charged with arson, burglary and criminal mischief by the Tama County Sheriff's department. They were accused of causing several thousands of dollars damage at a bridge construction site north of Traer on May 18.

Mr. & Mrs. Dave Folkerts of Ottumwa are parents of a son born Aug. 1,

Mr. & Mrs. Mike Lewis are parents of a daughter.

The City Council met last Tuesday in special session to give final approval of an amended city ordinance which provides a new rate structure for garbage collection and requiring the use of City

garbage bags.

Reinbeck's Action Post 242 American Legion presented a check for $250 to Reinbeck's Cub Scout Pack 73. The Action Post has sponsored the Reinbeck Cub Scout Pack and their leaders since the Cub Scouts were founded in Reinbeck.

30 YEARS AGO

AUGUST 9, 1979

RCS classes to begin August 23 with 44 teachers and administrators and 28 nonteaching personnel. There will be 5 new teachers on staff for 1979-80; Tom Bergstrom, guidance counselor; Cheryl Hillmer, elementary reading improvement; Jane Koele, grades 4 & 5; Neil Lundgren, Jr./Sr. high mathematics; and Joe Schuver, high school English.

Wendell Storjohann, 58, Gladbrook, died at his home in Gladbrook.

Myrtle Watson, 85, Indio, CA, former Reinbeck resident, died Aug. 4.

Rev. and Mrs. Clell Hickman will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 22.

Reinbeck's annual Sweet Corn Day and Sidewalks Sales to be held on Aug. 11.

A few more than 100 persons braved the intense heat on Sunday to participate in the public tour of Reinbeck's new water facility.

Thaddeus (Bud) Hummel, 76, former Morrison resident, died August 5 at Allen Hospital from complications following a stroke.

Lydia Rest, 82, Gladbrook, died Aug. 2.

Guiliette Schwarz of Parkersburg and Curtis Storjohann were united in marriage June 23.

Mrs. Florence Cheeseman will celebrate her 90th birthday on Aug. 10.

Seven hopper cars were involved in a Northwestern railroad derailment about 4 1/2 miles northeast of Reinbeck. Train crews worked all night to get the line in operation again.

Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Beatre of Solon Springs, WI. are parents of a daughter born Aug. 5. Donna Brown is the grandmother.

Oscar Depping, 59, rural Reinbeck, died July 31 at Sartori Hospital of a heart attack.

Edward Halupnik, 60, Traer, died at Schoitz Hospital after a short illness.

40 YEARS AGO

AUGUST 7, 1969

Herman A. Rickert, 82, died July 31 at Schoitz Hospital.

Chuck Fish, formerly of Reinbeck, was seriously injured last Saturday when he fell from a truck at Camp McCoy, WI where he was at reserve training. He was flown by helicopter to Great Lakes Hospital in Chicago for treatment of splintered thigh bone. He is expected to remain hospitalized for 2 to 3 months.

Emma DauSchmidt, 85, died Aug. 1 at Parkview Manor.

Mr. & Mrs. Stewart Engle are parents of a daughter born Aug. 4.

Mr. & Mrs. James Wyatt are parents of twin daughters born August 1.

Velma Petersen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ernst Petersen, was recipient of a $1,200 scholarship

awarded by Grundy County Memorial Board of Commissioners. She will be attending St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids.

Mr. & Mrs. Mike Lovell are parents of a daughter born Aug. 5.

Jane Ellen Creswell and William Weaverling were married on August 2 at the United Presbyterian Church in Reinbeck.

Darlene Mitchem and Kenneth Draper were married on July 26 at Prince of Peace Luth. Church in Waikiki.

Catherine Bee, 83, died on July 30th at her home in Grundy Center.

Reinbeck Commercial Club is again sponsoring it's annual "Sweet Corn Day" on Friday, Aug. 8.

50 YEARS AGO

AUGUST, 1959

Three county boards of education: Grundy, Tama and Black Hawk met on Aug 3. to hear and pass judgement on the Reinbeck Community School District re-organization plan. Total loss to Reinbeck School district, as compared with area being served and sought amounts to 3 1/2 sections of land.

84th annual Grundy County Fair opens its gates next Tuesday, August 12, at the fairgrounds in Grundy Center, for a four day stand.

Henry Jargstorf, 69, died July 30 at the Vets Hospital in Des Moines.

Mr. & Mrs. Don Richter are parents of a son born July 30.

Mr. & Mrs. Gayle Lorenz are parents of a son born Aug. 1.

V.H. Kinsinger has purchased the 160 acre farm of John A. Greiner, 2 1/2 miles southwest of Grundy Center, for $72,000.

Reinbeck wants a Justice of the Peace, as J.J. Mulder has resigned, and Frank Fackel, a justice for over 25 years, refused to take the job.

Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Woehlk have sold their home to Mr. & Mrs. Emil Rickert for $19,000.

Edw. Klosterboer, Grundy Co. Recorder, has handed in his resignation to the board of supervisors. Applicants are being sought.

Reinbeck school buses traveled 87,700 miles in the 1958-59 school year.

60 YEARS AGO

AUGUST, 1949

Grundy County budget calls for a total of $387,400. Total is $53,282 more than last year.

In a deal consummated this week, D.A. Dougan and W.L. Mooty now own the entire stock of the Reinbeck Motor Co. Paul Graham and Virgil Copley dropped out. Dougan also purchased a half interest in the Reinbeck Motor Co. building. Graham and Dougan will continue as managers.

Reinbeck Union Congregational Church to undergo a $5,000 improvement by Sept. to remove the bell, add two new furnaces, modern conveniences, install public address system and chimes are to be added.

Wayne Wheeler, proprietor of Wheeler Appliance in Reinbeck, has installed the first television set in Grundy Co.

$25,000 damages are being asked of George D. Smith and son Gerald (Doug) Smith by the Phyllis Nehring estate. The suit was brought as a result of a girls death in an auto accident west of Reinbeck.

Mr. & Mrs. Donald Ebaugh, Dinsdale, are parents of a son born July 29.

Mr. & Mrs. Allan Petersen, Zaneta, are parents of a son born July 29.

70 YEARS AGO

AUGUST, 1939

The annual tournament at Grundy-Reinbeck Golf Club, west of Reinbeck, are expecting 75 players.

Richard Mason, 79, early day Reinbeck merchant, died at Graettinger, IA.

Grundy Co. budget is higher for next year, with a $13,475 increase. The budget is proposed at $353,907.

Reinbeck school board rehires all former bus drivers at same salary of $30 per month.

Reinbeck's new well is down 211 feet and near completion.

A new pump has been purchased at a cost of $1,229 and gives a capacity of 200 gallons per minute.

Dr. A.F. Walter, 82, one of Iowa's oldest physicians, will retire from active practice in Gladbrook.

Loyd Plaehn shipped 25 head of steers to Chicago this week and received $9.40 per hundred for them.

Robert J. Mathesen, east of Reinbeck, planted 8 1/2 acres of Canadian seed oats last spring for which he paid $2.00 per bushel. This week he received 680 bushels or 80 bushels per acre.

Mr. & Mrs. J. Mervil Unrau are parents of a son born on July 27 in Des Moines.

80 YEARS AGO

JULY, 1929

The first case of typhoid fever reported in many years is that of Harold Casstevens, son of Wm. Casstevens, living near Morrison. He has a rather mild case and is recovering.

Emma O'Hearn, 56, former area resident, died on Aug. 8.

Volta Dirks has rented the Peter Weaver farm east of Reinbeck, from the Sherratt estate at a cash rental of $10 an acre.

Joe McCoy has rented his farm of 400 acres to John Botteman at cash rent of $10 an acre.

Mr. & Mrs. Will Engel are parents of a son born Aug. 7.

Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Ehrig are parents of a daughter born in Iowa City, on Aug. 1.

Nick Lutgens of Waterloo, traded the equity in an 80 acre farm east of Waterloo, to the First Savings Bank of Reinbeck for the Windsor Hotel building as an investment. Jas. Fletcher will continue to lease it.
