NAMI Black Hawk County is sponsoring a free 12-week education program for families of individuals with mental illness. The series of free weekly classes will begin on Thursday, August 27, and run through November 12. The class is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the lower level at the First Congregational Church, 608 West 4th, in Waterloo.
Trained family members teach the course and all course material is free. The course covers different mental illnesses; medications, side effects, and strategies for medication adherence; and research related to the biology of brain disorders and the most effective treatments to promote recovery. In addition, the class helps family members understand the experience of a person who has mental illness and covers problem solving and communication techniques as well as strategies for handling crises and relapse. Finally, it offers care for the caregiver: how to cope with worry, stress, and emotional overload.
Participants must register in advance. To register, contact the NAMI office at 319-235-5263.
