Darlene Elaine Schmitz was born May 25, 1923 in rural Tama County near Gladbrook, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Dora Johns Busch. Darlene received her education in Crystal # 17 country school near her home. On November 3, 1942 she was united in marriage to Edmund Schmitz at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Darlene and Ed made their home most of their married life farming in Springcreek Township near Gladbrook and later retiring to town. Besides being a homemaker and farm wife she worked as a housekeeper for the Golden Door Motel from 1972 until 2005. After Ed's death on March 13, 2006 she continued to make her home in Gladbrook where she died on Wednesday morning, February 18, 2009 at the age of 85 years. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garwin where she was also a member of the Rosary Society. She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Dora Busch, husband Edmund, a daughter Rosemary in 1943 and a great granddaughter Carley Jo in July of 2008. She is survived by her children Terry (Danielle) Schmitz of Gladbrook, Duane (Sheila) Schmitz of Parker, CO, Daelynn (Carla) Schmitz of Omaha, NE, Nancy (Marvin) Boldt of Traer, IA, Betty Schmitz and Steve (Kimberly) Schmitz both of Gladbrook, 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
