Leona M. Oelschlager, 90, of Reinbeck, Iowa, died Thursday, January 15, 2009, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, in Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral services were Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Reinbeck, with Pastor Bruce Boyce officiating. Burial followed at the Maple Hill Cemetery rural Gladbrook. In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to the family for Diabetes Association and Cystic Fibrosis. Leona was born April 21, 1918, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Frese) Uben. She was born and raised in Juanita, Nebraska. On February 24, 1939, Leona was united in marriage to E. La Vern at Christ Lutheran Church in Juanita, NE. They moved to Iowa in September of 1940. Leona and La Vern farmed for three years north of Gladbrook then moved to a farm near Lincoln in 1952. After La Vern died in 1970, Leona operated the farm and moved to Reinbeck where she made her home until entering Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.
She worked most of her life helping farm and working in the home. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Leona was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church in Gladbrook, where she was the organist, Sunday school teacher and Ladies aid member serving as President and secretary. After moving to Reinbeck, Leona became an active member at St. John's Lutheran Church, belonging to the Dorcas Society and also a member of SOS ladies.
She is survived by one son, Gary (Alice) Oelschlager of Reinbeck, IA; grandchildren; Bruce Allan Oelschlager of Gladbrook, IA; Wendy Sue (Jason) Meester of Holland, IA; great grandchildren, Shelby, Megan, Shannon, Jacob; two brothers, Lawrence Uden of Kenesaw, NE; Marvin Uden of Columbus, NE; two sisters, Dorothy (Allan) Slater of Waterloo, IA; Irene (Robert) Struss of Kenesaw, NE; sister-in-law, Dorothy Uden of Hastings, NE; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, La Vern; daughter, Sandra Kay; son, Wayne; grandson, David Wayne and one brother, Elmer Uden.
